Our roads wind through mountains, pass through bustling cities, and navigate around natural wonders. While we provide estimated travel times for every route, the reality is that Guatemala's roads can surprise you. Here's what you need to know to plan your journey with confidence.

Unpredictable Variables

Traffic jams in Guatemala City: The capital can be congested, especially during rush hours (7–9 AM, 5–7 PM).
Winding mountain roads: Routes around Lake Atitlán and Antigua involve steep, curvy roads that take time.
Weather conditions: Heavy rain can slow travel, and occasional mudslides may cause detours.
Road construction: Infrastructure improvements sometimes mean temporary delays.

The Golden Rule: Add 1 Hour

To manage expectations and avoid stress, we recommend adding at least one hour to the advertised travel time for any route.

Example:

If a route says "90 minutes," plan for 2.5 hours. Sometimes you'll arrive earlier — that's awesome! — but it's better to have extra time than to feel rushed.

Critical: Airport Transfers

If you're heading to La Aurora International Airport (Guatemala City), this is especially important:

Choose an earlier shuttle: Don't cut it close. Select a departure time that gives you at least 3–4 hours before your flight.
Allow extra buffer time: Traffic in Guatemala City can be unpredictable, and missing your flight is not worth the risk.
